He also continues his mission to help other undocumented students with powerful Mic.com documentary.

Last week, multi-platinum recording artist, global activist and first rap ambassador of Global Citizen Karim Kharbouch, better known by his stage name French Montana, who immigrated to the South Bronx from Morocco at age 13, released a powerful short documentary with Mic.com on the day that he received his U.S. citizenship.

Montana hosted a dinner for three very lucky high school dreamers at his home in California. Here, they all sat down together over dinner to discuss the importance of DACA and brought awareness to his “We Are The Dream” Campaign with educational non-profit Get Schooled. The #WeAreTheDream campaign targets high school to college-aged undocumented students and aims to help them attain higher education without barriers. Though Montana has already received his citizenship, he’s working hard to ensure that other young people who remain undocumented in America have a chance to live out their dreams.

Please see French Montana’s official statement below:

“I see my face in all of y’all ’cause, you know, I came here in ’96, but they didn’t have the DACA program and stuff like that when I came,” Montana said. So, for me, when I got — After 12th grade, they basically just told me I couldn’t go to college.”

Earlier this year, Montana became the very first rap ambassador of Global Citizen for his continuous humanitarian efforts with DACA, maternal health care through the  Mama Hope #Unforgettable campaign, and his Pan African health and education movement into Morocco.

Watch Arty debut a track he wrote in honor of the late EDM legend, Avicii. While the track hasn’t officially released yet, it will is meant to be out soon.

April 20, 2018. A day that is forever going to be a hard one to forget for anyone in the industry as well as dance music fans around the world. While some time has passed, the industry as a whole, artists and fans included are still mourning the passing of one of EDM’s greatest young producers whom we lost way too early, Avicii.

While the tributes keep pouring in by the plenty, everyone seems to be coping with the loss in their own unique ways. While there have been numerous mixes and remixes of some of his greatest music, on the other hand, the big guns of EDM like Tiesto and Nicky Romero to name a few have dedicated huge chunks of their sets at major festivals like Ultra and Coachella towards tributes to the man. His homeland as well has been paying tribute to the Swede in many ways from church bells chiming his tracks to the time over a 1000 singers performed a heart-wrenching version of “Wake Me Up.” We wish we could still wake him up, but…

A couple of days ago, Russian DJ and Producer Arty, released a track influenced by Avicii’s signature style of music and titled it “For Tim.” The young artist released a video from when he debuted the track only a few days ago stating “I could barely hold my tears…”

While he doesn’t specifically state in the tweet what the track it is or who it was for, he went on to reply to a fan who tweeted to him asking if it was “For Tim?” To which he replied to confirm it was indeed and also that it was the very title of the track as well. He further went on to engage with fans on twitter who said Avicii would be smiling and dancing in heaven when he heard this to which Arty responded saying he would only hope his friend has finally found his peace and how he really missed him.

While the influence Avicii has had on the largest to the smallest of names in music is undeniable, his lively and addictive style of synth pops and unforgettable hooks is something many are trying to keep alive. While this track by Arty is the only testament to that, it’s not only an incredible display of respect and love for Bergling but also combines the evident melodic influence from his style of music with Arty’s unique progressive house style’s to create something extremely special.

All On YouLOOPERS – All On You

LOOPERS is back, and he’s bringing the heat with his newest release ‘All On You‘. Having previously released on Laidback Luke’s label MixMash Records, LOOPERS is perhaps best known for his recent work on STMPD Records. STMPD is run by Martin Garrix and it was here that they released their collaboration ‘Game Over‘. If you check out LOOPERS’ Soundcloud, you can see that it’s loaded with bangers. It goes without saying that this release adds one more to that long list.

‘All On You’ exemplifies exactly what you would expect from a LOOPERS track. It’s fast paced, punchy, and includes some very unique sounds. LOOPERS has come to be known for his sound design, as his leads give us drops that don’t really sound like any one else’s. In the world of dance music, this is an important part of finding your sound. As you can hear for yourself, LOOPERS is doing just that.

Alongside the track, LOOPERS also released a music video for the track which you can view here. ‘All on You’ is out now on STMPD Records, and can be streamed below.

Zedd in the park

Zedd Hypes Us Up For ‘Zedd In The Park’

Earlier this year, Zedd shocked us all when he revealed his plans for a new event called ‘Zedd In The Park‘. Zedd In The Park is being presented by Insomniac Events, and will be held at the Los Angeles State Historic Park. Zedd In The Park will take place on on Tuesday, July 3, 2018. This will be the first dance music event at the State Historic Park following its remodeling. The remodeling started in 2013, and saw its grand reopening in April of 2018.

Zedd In The Park will feature a trio of dance music’s rising artists. The event will see Zedd enlisting the help of WhethanMedasin, & Oliver Tree.  Each bring their own unique sound to the historic venue.

The trailer below showcases the venue as we get the chance to catch some views of the beautiful Los Angeles State Historic Park. The teaser plays to the tune of some Zedd music. The tune in question is the Chachi & Dstar Remix to Zedd’s mega hit ‘The Middle‘. In the video we get the chance to see all four of the artists having some fun. I’m sure this is the same response we can expect for ourselves come July 3rd.

In case you weren’t aware, Zedd hasn’t headlined a solo show in LA since his ACLU benefit in 2017. It goes without saying, this is something you do not want to miss. Tickets to the event are on sale now. You can find them here.

VALENTINE

VALENTINE & Halpe – Falling (feat. Chuck Sutton)

Falling in love is one of the most exciting feelings to experience. DJ and producer VALENTINE knows exactly what it’s like as he expresses it in his new single ‘Falling’. He teamed up with producer Halpe and singer Chuck Sutton who helped create this unforgettable masterpiece. The pop and electronic vibes are what make this track unique. Its glitch-hop sounds stand out and draws in listeners. Released by Majestic Casual Records, this is the first episode of VALENTINE’s debut concept album and we can’t wait to hear more!

‘Falling’ is more than just a song. VALENTINE produced this mix to resemble the love story he has with his fiancée. This upbeat track begins with high synths that automatically play. Soon, the male vocals run simultaneously until it hits the drop. Once the drop releases, the beat changes and the focus is on the soaring bass lines. Towards the end, the second drop goes hard as the synths and bass lines intertwine. Take a listen to ‘Falling’ below and let us know what you think!

prank

Four years ago we all remember what happened during DJ Snake‘s set at Ultra, the French DJ and producer had come up with a hilarious prank for his fellow DJ friend Dillon Francis. The set went off as usual with the exception of one image that was plastered along the screens at the main stage:

prank

Cut back to today and we have a mysterious counter that has gone live on what appeared to be DJ Snake‘s website that had fans speculating just what the “Special Announcement” could be.

prank

Fans also speculated that it may have had something to do with the upcoming album DJ Snake tweeted about being on the way just last month.

However, the countdown concluded and it was revealed that the whole thing had been a clever ruse put together by the hilarious DJ Dillon Francis himself.

It turn out Francis had been biding his time and waited years to finally find the right moment to execute his revenge prank, as explained in the video he posted below.

The website, DJSnake.com, had actually been used by Francis to promote his brand new track collaboration with Jarina De Marco funny enough named, “Look At That Butt“.

prank

All in all Francis states that it is now DJ Snake’s move as he waits to see how he will get back at Dillon. Make sure to give the site a visit and check out the new release, as it is another one of Francis bangers and a new banger is never bad, clever prank or not.

Canada is the 2nd country in the world to legalize marijuana.

The cats out of the bag. Canada has finally passed the Cannabis Act, approving sales, growth, and possession of pot. You know what this says about future Canadian music festivals? You don’t need to hide the drug in your socks anymore. Music festivals like Shambhala, Veld, Snowbombing, North by Northeast and many others will allow attendees to freely use the substance. So not much will change aside from festival goers openly using it on festival grounds rather than sneaking it around. We’re not mad about that.

What are your thoughts on the news?

Zaxx together

ZAXX – Together

If there’s one artist whose sound has come a long way since they’ve started, it’s definitely ZAXX. From his massive remix of ‘Better Off Alone’ to now, it’s been a treat to watch his journey. And the latest move in that journey is his newest track, ‘Together‘.

“‘Together’ was one of the first songs I wrote that really brought me out of my comfort zone – a zone I’ve been in for too long. I tried to create a message of unity by reiterating just one lyric throughout, echoing ‘Together.’ I want people who listen to figure out what that means for themselves.

If you’re a fan of Porter Robinson’s Worlds sound then ‘Together’ is definitely going to be the track for you. Featuring gorgeous melodies and even some Japanese vocal samples, it’s an absolute beauty of a piece. But with that being said, it’s not some World’s knock off. It’s a unique piece deserving of a listen in its own right. So give it the listen it deserves and grab your own copy in the link below.

And what could be better than the duo bringing their unique funky vibes to the show? Bringing featured vocalist Dram along of course. And what would be even more impressive than THAT? A six-piece live gospel choir to perform the backup vocals for the track should do it!

These additions bode well for anyone hoping to see Chromeo on their current tour. With Bonnaroo already behind them, the funk duo is heading to Electric Forest for two weekends of performances. With an intoxicating and captivating live performance, they will undoubtedly be one of the best acts the Forest has to offer.

Funk Hunters

K-Theory Treats Funk Hunters Single to Epic Bass Remix

A few months ago the Funk Hunters released their debut album, Typecast. Their groovy jam sound is undeniable and is expressed expertly in one of the biggest tunes on the album, ‘Say Something‘. This epic track featuring the vocals of LIINKS is also perfect for remixing. And K-Theory is stepping up to the plate for the opportunity.

The self described heavy psychedelic bass music that K-Theory produces definitely shows it’s influences in this remix. Still using the main vocals from the original track, this remix of ‘Say Something’ packs a huge punch. With a grungy, gear-grinding feel to the atmosphere of the track, Dylan Lewman makes his mark on the Funk Hunters’ album. Sitting somewhere between festival trap and hard bass music, the K-Theory remix will definitely see a ton of headbangers going wild at festivals.

You can listen to the K-Theory remix of ‘Say Something’ by the Funk Hunters below. Let us know which version is your favorite. Do the vocals of LIINKS fit in well with the new sound or would you change it around?

It’s been a long time since we’ve heard about one of Deadmau5‘s infamous coffee runs. Previous guests on his YouTube series have included Pharrell, Zedd, Dillon Francis and even Skrillex. Joel took to Twitter to respond to a fan and give an update on the hilarious series earlier this week.

You read that right! It looks like Coffee Runs with Deadmau5 will soon be making a return and his next guest will be the only and only Getter. Expect to see some hilarious antics with Deadmau5 and of course, Canada’s favorite coffee, Tim Horton‘s.

Maybe we’ll even get a chance to see one of the future episodes take place in the mau5’s recently acquired ride, the Mclaren Senna. Maybe not.

Either way, feel free to relive some of the best moments from one of the past coffee runs that involved, Skrillex, Dillon Francis and Joel himself below.

You can listen to the audio version of this article HERE.

Whilst in New York City, I caught up with the owner of EDM.com, Ethan Baer, to discuss how he built a strong brand within the music industry and his thoughts on media publications operating in today’s digital environment.

EDM.com: First of all, thank you for being a guest in this series – I appreciate it.

Ethan Baer: My pleasure.

So for the people who don’t know who you are, just say a little bit about your origin story.

I’m Ethan Baer & owner of EDM.com. I’m also a partner within Artist Intelligence Agency which is a record label & publishing company. I was a DJ in college doing parties etc to share my taste in music. I got to a point in which I was the music discovery guy in my group of friends.

A lot of my friends asked me for input on my music. I started a blog without the intention of it becoming my business. I took a year off to figure where my life was going. I realized that my music blog was paying my bills.

It was helping you get by.

Yeah, I was able to live. That was enough for me to give it a go and it all happened from there.

So how did EDM.com actually come about?

To give you some background, we started as Dubstep.net. Slowly, we started to incorporate different genres of music into our promotional network. So House, Trap etc. All the EDM genres that you can think of.

It was a great strategy as if you searched Dubstep online, Dubstep.net would be one of the top results. Our SEO was great. The downside was that once we established a site for all the genres we wanted, we were running 15 different websites.

That’s crazy.

It was the same website but with different genres of music. So every day, it felt like I was doing the same thing 15 times. So rather than running 15 separate sites, we consolidated everything into one platform. By this point, EDM had emerged as a key buzzword within the music industry. EDM.com’s domain happened to be for sale, so we reached out and came up with a great deal.

He purchased the site in 1996 and had the choice of 2 domains between EDM.com & Golf.com. I think now he would regret not going after golf. But he was an engineer by trade, and so it was supposed to be called Electronic Discharge Machining. I don’t know what that is – but he purchased the site. It was a perfect storm at the right time.

The timing was perfect.

Yeah, everything came together & we became a dominant platform in the music space.

Wow. As you know, EDM.com has managed to accumulate over 1.7 million Facebook followers. What advice do you have for producers wanting to be featured on the platform?

I actually have some good feedback on this one based on an article that you wrote.

Hahaha.

If you’re an artist, you need to look at it from a perspective of the blogger. Understand that they might be going through 1000 emails that are identical to yours. What makes yours stand out is not making it look like spam, and just making the email presentable. `Be genuine, authentic, and get to the point. Don’t do spam follow-ups.

I get that all the time (sigh). It’s annoying.

I get the mentality of “oh they’re busy so I’ll just follow up”. But for the most part, most writers do a good job of going through their emails and listening to submissions. It’s a point of pride for them. But if you’re an artist & haven’t got a response, it’s just not good enough. It’s better to move on than be recognized as the guy who spams.

Exactly. Some people just accept rejection and simply send their future music once it’s released, and I’m always more than happy to listen. But others just get offended and ask why I’m not featuring their song.

Getting offended is not a good strategy.

Exactly. If anything, it makes bloggers not want to feature you.

Rather than diving into asking bloggers for stuff, start a relationship. It doesn’t have to come across as you wanting to be best friends. But creating a relationship is important. It makes me much more likely to listen to your track than someone else’s. After all, I know you.

At the end of the day, as a blogger, you have to be objective. But as much as you try to put conflicts of interest aside, having a relationship with people is always beneficial. Rather than ask yourself “how can I get what I need”, ask “how can we work together”.

I agree. I get a lot of people saying “hey please feature my track”. No. I probably won’t even listen to the track if you pitch like that. Why should I spend 30 mins on a review if you can’t be bothered to spend 5 mins on a good pitch?

Exactly. It may have been the best track you’ve ever been sent. But because they were rude, it’s a shame that they didn’t get featured. Poor communication skills can often get in the way of talent. It’s about being polite.

But don’t get discouraged. On our label, we have a submission portal that artists can submit tracks to. Often, we decline 20… But the 21st submission they send ends up being a massive release. Persistence is importance. But in contrast, some artists get p*ssed off when they get declined. If you believe in your music, keep submitting and good things will happen.

I totally agree with you. I uploaded a status a few weeks ago regarding the exact methods of getting featured on blogs. Some people said that we don’t listen to music and that we don’t reply to every submission. But in reality, we do (or at least we try to). It’s just a case of them putting in the effort to build a relationship.

We do want to hear their music, yes.

Of course – we need the content.

So what are your thoughts on blogs and media publications? Are they still relevant in your opinion?

Umm. It’s a tough one as I’m involved in this scene. With the record label business, the role of blogs and media platforms has certainly changed a lot. When I entered this space, it was the era of Hype Machine. That drove massive traffic to a song as multiple blogs were featuring a track.

Now, Hype Machine is still around. But it’s not really that relevant to break a record. That dealt a serious blow to the media place. However, that did not make blogs irrelevant. During the Hype Machine era, blog posts drove streams & traffic. That’s less so – even with Rolling Stone Magazine and Billboard. But blogs can be useful. eg. The sync licensing side of things. If your track gets featured in important publications, video game studios and commercial agencies will pick it up as it’s in the public eye.

It also helps with booking agents and things like that.

Yeah, it shows that a producer is recognized outside of their little community. They’re in an international space.

They use it as a stepping stone to progress their career.

A lot of media platforms have shifted to BuzzFeed style content which is dependant on utilizing social platforms. They’re creating viral content and using the blog as a central hub for their content, in contrast to using the blog to promote the content & drive traffic. I think the role has shifted dramatically. But the relevancy is still there.

Obviously, you’re a pretty busy guy most of the time.

Haha, yes most of the time.

So what are your thoughts on maintaining productivity & a social life?

I don’t know if you could have asked a harder question.

I’ve got a bigger one coming up – trust me.

It depends on your objectives & personally, and what you get happiness from. I have a lot of close friends that simply live to work. I could easily find a psychologist who would say that they’re compensating for something etc. But they love working and get energized by it. Finding a balance isn’t important for them.

But I know other people that need X amount of time away from work otherwise their productivity suffers and they lose passion. It’s hard to say specifically. It’s dependant on the individual. It’s hard in the music space. Very hard. What people in the corporate world would consider a social life is often considered work within the music industry.

Yeah, Festivals, shows etc.

Some would consider a festival as a social activity. But if you’re managing an artist or taking meetings, you’re not enjoying yourself at all whilst there as only doing work. Often, all the social things turn into work & you start to lose your social life. From experience, that can be very isolating. Even if you have a lot of friends in the workspace, you can lose a lot of friends outside of work. It has negative effects. It’s important to keep time for yourself… otherwise, everything else will suffer as a result.

I totally agree with you. This is a question that I ask at the end of every interview I do. If the world was to end tomorrow, what would you want future generations to remember you by?

Hahahahaha. I called myself wrong before on saying that was the hardest question. This is harder. Wow.

Take your time.

I want to contribute something to the world that would make a lasting difference. I don’t care if it brings me a lot of money. That doesn’t matter much. I enjoy the finer things in life. But it’s more important to know that I made a positive difference. That would mean more to me than anything else.

Whether it’s finding a way to innovate payment in the music space, or innovate how artists release/create music… whatever. Something that would have a positive impact on a lot of people.

That’s awesome. Thanks for coming on. I appreciate it.

My pleasure.
