Month: February 2018

Unite As every year for the past decade, tickets for Tomorrowland are sold out in a matter of minutes. No matter how anticipated you are, and how prepared you get for the sale: the day the sale starts, you must leave whatever it is that you are doing and just pray to the Rave God that you’ll be one of the lucky ones who gets access to the server.

The good news is that, since last year, there is a workaround for all of those who cannot make it to the big festival in Belgium, but still want to be a part of this unique experience: UNITE with Tomorrowland.

The original concept of Unite with Tomorrowland consists of massive parties happening simultaneously in different parts of the world, so you can connect, celebrate and live the magic of this unique gathering even if you could not attend to the main event. Taking place in 7 spots at the same time, Unite counts with a live satellite streaming connection with Tomorrowland in Belgium and epic lineups across all the locations.

This year, Unite will occur on July 28th (thus during the second weekend of Tomorrowland). The chosen countries for 2018 are Abu DhabiItaly, Lebanon, Malta, Mexico, Spain and Taiwan. That’s it: you no longer have an excuse, so watch the video below, pick your destination and get ready for a new chapter with the People Of Tomorrow.

cube 0.5Known for his amazing music, mau5-heads, Twitch stream, Twitter beefs and of course his spectacular stage setups, Canadian producer deadmau5 wowed crowds with the orchestral remix of his classic track ‘Strobe’ on Other Cube

Joel Zimmerman has teased the highly anticipated remix before, and recently tweeted about “seriously the most epic thing” he’s ever done with his music, something to do with a 60-piece orchestra. We seriously can’t wait for the release of that project.

Cube 0.5 is the latest of deadmau5’s high-tech stage productions. First there was the Cube (referred to as 1.x by fans), then Cube 2.0 and the enormous Cube 2.1. The footprint of 0.5 is actually small enough to fit in Zimmerman’s basement, and is much more suited to travel, especially overseas.

Check out the orchestral ‘Strobe’ remix below:

Hot off the desk is another exclusive track from Finnish deep house wonder, Yotto. He previewed his new track, ‘Chemicals’, during his Essential Mix on Pete Tong’s BBC Radio 1. This is the first track of the year for Yotto, and it sees its release on Joris Voorn‘s Green label. ‘Chemicals’ is one of two songs on Yotto’s upcoming EP Chemicals. The other song, ‘Second Life‘, is the other half of this EP.

The track comprises of hi-hats skipping with a fuzzy hypnotic bass. The Fin’s instantly recognizable big room kick drums and soaring synths accompany each movement. You can expect to hear this flavorful effort resonating in sweaty peak-time nightclub sets everywhere. ‘Chemicals’ has the just the right amount of groove for it to be a dancefloor burner. With his heady, atmospheric electronic music, the change in his sound here is quite evident.

From ethereal tracks to peak time techno, Yotto creates intoxicating productions. He’s earned five ‘Essential New Tune’ nods from Pete Tong and two ‘Hottest Record[s] In the World’ on Annie Mac’s BBC Radio 1 show. 2018 will showcase his multifarious remix list of the Gorillaz, Röyksopp and Coldplay. A 5-track EP on Anjunadeep is pending as well.

March 2nd is the release date. Preview the track on Soundcloud below. Don’t forget to pre-order your copies on Beatport here.

Using the right kind of effects can make any track stand out. For many producers, using the right amount of effects can be the difference between a banger or a complete bore of a track. Today, we’ll discuss one of the most commonly used effects and what it can do to help your productions.

When you learn how to produce music, the last thing you probably want to think about is how much the audio effects can alter the sound of track. We all just want what’s in our head to be jotted down and completed in the DAW as fast as possible. While it would be nice to have instant gratification for creating a track, creating the next great banger isn’t always that easy.

Understanding the different production tools available to you can make a world of difference in how your track comes to life. A big aspect of how your track shapes up is the audio effects that you use on your track. For those of you that are new to producing, audio effects are plugins that you place on a track to add a specific sound effect to that given track.

For example, if you wanted to have a piano sound like it was playing in a hallway, you could add a reverb plugin in to help reach your desired effect. With that said, our audio effect of focus today will be Reverb and how it can positively (or negatively) alter the outcome of your track.

How it Works

Reverb (short for Reverberation) is an effect that’s present in our every day lives. Any sort of movement that you make can has reverb. Let’s say you’re walking down a hallway by yourself. The sound of your footsteps will bounce off of the walls and result in a deep, echo type sound. That is an example of reverb effecting the natural sound of a movement.

Reverb is essentially the amount of space used between the initial impact of the sound and the final result we hear in our ears. Depending on where you’re at, the amount of reverb could drastically change. Just because one movement sounds a certain way in a hallway doesn’t mean it’ll sound the same on a sidewalk. Due to the varying type of reverb, not every reverb effect will result in the same outcomes. Here are some of the most popular types of reverb and what they do to your sound.

Types of Reverb

Hall Reverb: This type of reverb is designed to give a lush, spacious sound that would be heard during a performance at a concert hall. With its crisp and accurate interpretation of the original sound, hall reverb serves as that complimentary piece to help that sound stand out in front of the crowd.

Room Reverb: The most straightforward of the reverb types, room reverb is the sound you would get from your typical, run of the mill room build with no acoustic treatment.  What you hear is the natural echo bouncing off of the walls and that’s it. While the type of rooms will differ on the building you’re currently in, room reverb will provide a very similar effect to any space that isn’t built for these purposes. If you want an intimate, no-frills reverb that feels natural to you, room reverb may be your best bet.

Plate Reverb: Of the different reverb types, plate reverb may give off the smoothest and richest effect of them all. Based off of the reverberation from a sheet of metal, plate reverb tends to give off a greater density of the effect and is known for having the best taper of any reverb.  Plate reverb is a great effect to use with other reverb types because of its balanced tails at the end of each reverberation.

Spring Reverb: The last type of reverb I’ll discuss today is spring reverb. This type of reverb is used on mostly individual instrument tracks and not a bus or a return/send channel. The reason for this is spring reverb was initially intended to give a bounce or a type of character to the instrument it’s being used on. Unlike other types of effects, spring reverb tends to be Lo-Fi (Low Fidelity) and gives more of a natural feedback.  For synths that are modeled after acoustic instruments, spring reverb could provide that ounce of life in the instrument that would normally be found in the instrument it’s based on.

Popular Reverb Plugins

While the native plugins in your DAW may handle all of your needs, here’s a few popular reverb plugins that you can add to your arsenal in the near future. The plugins listed below are for reverb only. Plugins with multi FX functionality are not included in this list. Details about these particular plugins can be found in the price links below.

Valhalla Room Reverb

 Creator: Valhalla DSP

Price: $50

FabFilter Pro-R

Creator: Fab Filter

Price: $199

Renaissance Reverb

Creator: Waves Audio

Price: $39 (current sale price)

Creator: Native Instruments

There we have it!  A summary of what reverb can do to your track and how the different types of reverb can make a world of difference when you’re working on new material. I hope you’ve found this article helpful! There will be more overviews of other audio effects coming in the future, so stay tuned!

Back in 2015, Ultra Music Festival turned to the dark side and enlisted Arcadia Spectacular to put together their brand new RESISTANCE Stage. It featured an abundance of renowned techno DJs from across the world. The most impressive aspect was the new stage, which featured recycled military parts to create a steampunk wonderland.

In 2016, the festival debuted the Arcadia Spider, which was a stage that left everyone speechless. RESISTANCE also spread to Singapore, Paraguay, Peru, Brasil, and Chile for the first time. And now, RESISTANCE will debut its first ever, standalone three-day festival this May in Mexico City!

For those who don’t know, RESISTANCE is Ultra’s curation of the world’s finest house and techno acts. The popularity for these genres has grown immensely since 2015 as the brand has expanded globally. RESISTANCE hosted 33 events across 5 continents in 2017 alone. If you’re tired of hearing the DJ shout “3-2-1-GO!” or simply want a taste of something different and far from mainstream, RESISTANCE is the place to be.

RESISTANCE Mexico City will be taking place at Club de Golf, Teotihuacán on May 25th, 26th and 27th2018. Take a look at the official trailer below!

There are so many ways to go about it, but you have to put in the work!

Creativity and writing skills go hand in hand and both should flow together if you want to maximize your results. Although you can read all about how to boost your creativity and writing skills, it’s worthless if you don’t put in the required time to experiment and practice!

Doing this doesn’t only makes you familiar with new things but also helps you incorporate any newly learned skills into your music writing session. There are a lot of things out there, but personally speaking, these are the 5 things that helped me out tremendously!

1. A Track A Day For 7 Days

There are a lot of variations to this exercise. A track a day for a month, 2 tracks a day for 7 days etc. But in order to avoid my brain exploding in this creative rush, a track a day for 7 days worked out the best for me. This is a nice exercise because you have a set amount of time to think about an idea and get it out in your DAW. Because the challenge uses such small time frame, you don’t have much room to critique your choices or your creative direction

The main part about this exercise is to not think about anything and just make whatever come to your mind, freely. And once you’re done with this you can dive into these projects later on and make any critical changes that you think are necessary, like improving the mixdown, completing an incomplete idea etc. After you’re done with all the 7 songs, you’ll have 2 EPs worth of stuff ready at your disposal!

2. Sound Design Day

Allotting a full day just for sound design can help out so much with your creativity and music writing skills. Giving out a day for just one task can give you a lot of time to mess around and get crazy with sound in order to get some unique results. The main idea behind this is that you have to make at least 10 different good sounding and processed sounds in a day that are totally different from each other. Some can be synth patches, arps, pads etc. You can definitely extend the number of sounds you wish to make in a day and once you’re done with it, just save these presets or bounced audio files into your personal sample folder so the next time you start writing something you’ll already have something new in your inventory. This doesn’t only give you room to be as creative as you can but also helps speed up your writing process!

3. Make Your Own Samples

Just like sound design day, consider this as a day of nothing but making new and custom samples for your own use that defines you as an artist, sounds cool right? It is a tedious and time-consuming task but is super rewarding and you’ll feel so good and proud to use these samples in your tracks.

There are many ways to go about it really. You can design new kicks using kick generator plugins like Kick 2, you can make new snares by layering different samples and combining them in form of Transient, Body, Tail and processing them differently to get a totally different and unique snare sample. You can record foley’s, atmosphere sound, make new effects like impacts, risers, uplifters, downlifters etc. The possibilities are endless and you might get a ton of awesome samples with a day of work!

4. Write & Save Melodies, Chords & Arps

Like the earlier exercises that focus on making new sounds and samples, this exercise is a rather sensitive one. In this, there should be a greater focus on Quality and emotions rather than quantity. Just jam out to a drum loop or write down blocks of chords, harmonies to go with those chords, new melodies, and even custom arp patterns. One thing you can do is write down some chords with 5ths or 7ths, throw an arpeggiator plugin on it, extract the midi notes from it and alter those to change the flow and feel. Once you’re done making these chords and melodies, just save that midi block which you can definitely use later on!

Like making sounds and samples, the possibilities are endless here as well. All you have to do is follow your heart and what you’re feeling. Make what your soul tells you and what it feels in the moment. For example: don’t force yourself to write an aggressive track if you’re feeling sad. Going with your feelings will give you a greater emotional connection with your songs!

5. Clean Up Your Sample Library

Now, this will not boost your creativity but might speed up your writing process because you won’t have to scroll through pointless bad samples that you don’t / won’t use. One upside to doing this is that you might come across some good samples and loops that you didn’t know about previously! It makes me super excited when something like this happens. This also forces you to mess around to make those samples work or make something totally new with it.

Everything revolving around music is super exciting and your viewpoint and mindset play a major role in deciding the results. So, it’s all about how you approach anything and as always, the possibilities are endless. We hope you learned something and it helps you out in some way or the other!!

Wolfgang Gartner & k?d – ‘Banshee’

When producers “randomly” post a photo alongside another talented artist, fans realize that this act is often not so coincidental. It’s always done with a specific purpose in mind.

Last week, Patrick Cybulski, better known as k?d, teased his fans by stating “new music coming soon” and removed the remainder of the photo on his Instagram post, seen below.

Keeping the fool-proof publishing tactic in mind, k?d hinted that a new highly anticipated collaboration was about to drop.

Today the speculations are put to rest as the ‘Somewhere Far Away From Here‘ DJ has announced that he was teamed up with the electro-house superstar Wolfgang Gartner to unleash ‘Banshee‘.

Striving together to create a fresh take on both of their distinct sounds, the American duo did not disappoint and went above and beyond everyone’s expectations.

The groovy melodies blend beautifully into the hard-hitting gritty electro synths, delivering another electro-heavy finish. This is guaranteed to make their dedicated followers fall in love with their sound, once again.

The festival is just trying to give everyone a fair shot!

At every concert, there is always a dedicated group of people that will camp out at the rail, sometimes for the duration of an entire festival.  Some festivals, such as Bonnaroo and Electric Forest, have initiated various procedures to give other festival-goers a fair shot at being front row for their favorite artists.

Having a spot at the rail during a music festival has always been glorified, but over the recent years it’s become some sort of feat to accomplish.  Many music-lovers that attend festivals, especially Bassnectar fans, want to get a spot at the rail and document it via a nice photo or a video of them and their crew headbanging to their favorite song.

Okeechobee Music & Arts Festival, taking place March 1-4 at Sunshine Grove, Florida, is taking initiative this year to prevent the infamous rail-campers.  On February 6th, the festival’s official Twitter account replied to someone announcing that they would be clearing the rail between each set this year.

As the festival stated, “it’s only fair”, meaning that they understand that other fans want a chance at the rail.  Despite various fans’ replies to their tweets asking clarifying questions about if a specific policy would exist or not, they have not responded.

In 2016, Bassnectar himself tweeted to fans asking them not to camp out at the rails in order to respect other artists and treat other fans with respect.  Bassheads definitely have a reputation of being the ones to remain at the rail throughout the entire festival, but Lorin Ashton (Bassnectar) did strike an important chord here.  If so much of the EDM community is focused on spreading PLUR, shouldn’t they be sharing the rail so that other fans can be front and center for their favorite artists?

Hopefully, with more and more festivals taking proper action against festival rail-hogs, fans worldwide will start to get their chance to be closer to their favorite artists sets.  What do you think about the entire issue?

artuySince its release back in December, Virtual Self’s ‘Ghost Voices’ has taken the dance music scene by storm. Calvin Harris recently confessed that it was this song that inspired him to return to his roots. Above & Beyond have made this track a pillar in their sets while on tour. And Sirius XM’s Electric Area recently named ‘Ghost Voices’ the number one dance track in North America. But one producer has been building up a lot of hype for his remix of this newly proclaimed transcendent track.

Russian trance icon ARTY finally dropped his ‘Ghost Voices’ remix. After teasing this remix on Youtube for weeks, ARTY unleashed this remix during his set at Exchange LA as ALPHA 9. And there’s no question about it- he nailed it.

He kept all the key sounds and chords from the original, virtually untouched. The main drop uses the Dance Dance Revolution sounds from the original and amplifies them over a monster bass line. We cannot wait for the official release date for this one. In the meantime, you can satisfy your eyes and ears with the video below.

Many music festivals and shows have seen their fair share of startling moments. Sometimes the music and atmosphere can make people make some not-so-wise decisions and place themselves in life threatening situations. Recently, this happened when one attendee got a little too comfortable with playing with the scaffolding at Above & Beyond‘s show at the Fillmore in Detroit.

On Sunday, a shirtless man decided to hang off of the lighting scaffolding that was attached onto the venue’s balcony. Other attendees at the show claimed he was doing 5 to 10 pull ups on the bar before his friends quickly pulled him up to safety. As filmed in the video below, the crowd right beneath him seemed to have a mixture of awe and worry as they pointed flashlights at him. This all happened during Above & Beyond’s song ‘Naked’, but several other Redditors joked that his action would be more fitting at an Excision concert. While the action comes across as a combination of hilarity, stupidity and fright, we can be all glad that he was rescued and didn’t fall.

Take a look at a snippet of the event unfold below.

Steve Angello’s New Album Is Filled With Dance Floor Hits

Steve Angello has come a long way after the Swedish House Mafia split. His 2016 album ‘Wild Youth’ showcased the beautiful and versatile sound of the Swede. Finally, after waiting 2 years with teasers and ID tracks at festivals, Steve has previewed his forthcoming album ‘Human’.

Steve Angello has remained true to himself and to his music. He can be versatile within electronic music and yet be unique. By the same token, the previews of his upcoming album ‘Human’ have has showcased that unique sound. While ‘Wild Youth’ was a more laid-back electronic album, ‘Human’ is shaping up to be an album filled with dance floor bangers. The release date for this album is yet to be set, but the wait will be undoubtedly worth it.

If you are a loyal fan of Above & Beyond, then most likely Northern Soul has become your favorite track of 2018 so far. The music and the rhythm, combined with Richard Bedford‘s powerful voice are all components that make this song an emotional and perfect ode to Detroit, and another gem in Above & Beyond’s catalog.

Remixing such a special tune is definitely a big responsibility, and only the brave can do it. Just a couple of days ago, NWYR surprised us with a very neat version of Northern Soul on A State Of Trance 850. Now, german DJ and producer Ben Böhmer accepted this challenge as well and brought us a new remix, with a deeper beat that blends perfectly with the lyrics.

Having recently joined Anjunadeep, Ben Böhmer had a guest appearance on Group Therapy 270 this past weekend, and he’s already making his way towards the top. We hope we can hear more from him in the near future. Check his remix of ‘Northern Soul’ below.

We have just gotten word that AEG and Goldenvoice have bought out FYF Fest’s founder Sean Carlson’s stake from his festival and will carry on the torch without him. This move stems following a number of sexual harassment allegations against Carlson that first began back in November.

After quietly distancing itself, AEG activated a buyout clause in Goldenvoice’s six-year-old deal with Carlson and acquired his remaining 50 percent stake in the festival. The multi-day event is now being booked by Goldenvoice’s Jennifer Yacoubian, who books the Shrine Auditorium, the company’s Splash House series in Palm Springs and the El Rey Theatre in Los Angeles. FYF co-producer Dave Peterson will also remain in the company and continue to help make the event a possibility.

In November, just as the #MeToo movement was picking up momentum four women stepped forward and accused Carlson between 2010 and 2015. A number of women spoke to Spin about the allegations, including former freelance music photographer Natasha Ryan, who said she met Carlson at a late night VIP after-party where she and others got into a hot tub.

“This guy kept coming up to me and trying to take my bra off and I had to keep batting him away,” she said. After repeated attempts, Carlson allegedly approached her and “started grabbing me and trying to kiss me” while attempting to pull her into the bathroom to make out. Another woman accused Carlson of barging in on her in a bathroom at a party and demanding oral sex, later pinning her down on a couch and trying to make out with her. The four accounts told to Spin allege a pattern of behavior that included aggression while intoxicated and crossing many personal lines of conduct.

Carlson later admitted some of the incidents were true, while others “contain serious misstatements and omissions.” He also said, “I acted inappropriately and shamefully, and deeply regret my actions.”

Created by Carlson in 2004, FYF Fest has grown from a small festival staged at The Echo in L.A. to a large multiday event. While the festival began with mostly independent and unsigned bands, the 2017 event included performances by Missy Elliott, Björk, Frank Ocean, A Tribe Called Quest, Nine Inch Nails and Iggy Pop. We look forward to seeing this festival evolve and thrive.

Australia’s own Litche has been somewhat of a recluse when it comes to his music but is returning in a big way with the first track off his Debut EP Voyage with vocals by the lovely Woodes. Litche is no stranger to using Woodes’ vocals, as he gained massive attention for his remix of Woodes own track “Rise“. The two decided to come together for a production all their own and it’s a beautiful result as their talents come together so well.  Litche’s production prowess shines as the track uses Woodes voice in a incredible way.

Elle started to play with melodic ideas and writing down some rough lyric ideas. After about an hour Elle had worked out the vocal melody and we also recorded tonnes of atmospheric vocal bits that we layered together and messed around with. Before long we knew something was forming.” Litche said. As the first track of his upcoming EP, it is sure to be some of the best work he has come up with to date.

It seems that smart speakers are the new product exploding in the marketplace with all tech giants rushing to get their offering live but currently Google and Amazon are the only ones making serious strides thanks to their powerful voice-assistants. Apple also just started to get their feet wet in the field but based on recent reviews, Siri still has a long way to go before it can compete with the best. The problem is that doesn’t leave the consumer with many options to choose from. Now, enters Facebook into the equation.

Facebook’s smart speaker has been rumored since last year and it looks like they’re finally pushing the idea. In fact, two devices — codenamed Fiona and Aloha — could be going head-to-head with the Amazon Echo and Google Home this July. Similar to the Echo Show, Aloha will reportedly carry a 15-inch touchscreen, while Fiona looks to be a more traditional voice-controlled speaker without an interface. So far there haven’t been any leaks for the speakers’ design so we’ll have to just wait and see what Facebook has been working on. Stay tuned for information regarding the social media giant’s foray into the smart speaker game.

dillon francis Dillon Francis has left the world of Snapchat to take his talents to Instagram. Yes, you read that correctly, the man behind the creative Snap Stories and ingenious movie-like clips has decided the new update was no good for him. And he’s definitely not the only one. Many other Snapchat users feel this way as well and have started a petition to get the App to go back to it’s pre-update setup.

“Not really feeling this update so I’m going to be moving my stuff to Instagram and Instagram Stories. If anything changes I’ll be back, but for now you can catch me over there and I’ll hopefully see ya. Alright, it’s been fun. We had a good run.”

You always have to wonder who is in charge of these ideas for updates, as some are so bad for some very popular apps. Many other users with large followings are also leaving Snap after this update. And unless the app fixes it’s mistake quickly, they may lose a lot more.

Hello there 👋

The Austin based duo, Tritonal, is back with tour dates across intimate venues to celebrate the 10 year Anniversary of their label Enhanced Music.

From what kicked off with humble beginnings in 2008, Tritonal and the beloved label Enhanced Music that they created, have come a long long way!

While the Austin based duo Chad Cisneros and Dave Reed have been filling out the largest of venues and playing every thinkable major festival, for this particular tour celebrating 10 years of Enhanced, they wanted to turn things down a notch and move to smaller more intimate venues going back to their roots.

The tour kick starts in April with a number of dates across the U.S. with some dates for shows outside of the United States soon to be added. With shows around San Francisco, Portland, Boston, San Diego and Chicago, Tritonal is looking to add quite a few more dates along with the supporting acts who will be joining them on tour as well.

With a label that is responsible for discovering and launching the likes of Arty, Audien, and BRKLYN, Tritonal has also provided a platform for acts like Felix Cartal and Disco fries to grow and shine. With a past record of being one of the most dependable labels that delivers tune after tune and outdoes themselves each time, there is no doubt that a number of known as well as stellar up and coming artists from the label will be supporting the duo on this tour.

While there is still over a month till the tour actually kicks off, here is a Spotify playlist by the duo themselves showcasing the best of the label to tide us over in the meantime.

Last night, the annual NBA All-Star Game took place in LA at the Staples Center.

Team Lebron came back late in the game to beat Team Stephen in a game that ended 148–145. Much of the game was a highlight reel, as the best players in the world took to the court to have some fun and give the fans a good show.

However, amongst all those highlights, there is one event that no one can stop talking about. That’s right. We’re talking about Fergie‘s performance of the National Anthem during the halftime show.

The Black Eyed Peas singer’s slow, bluesy rendition of “The Star-Spangled Banner” on Sunday night wasn’t particularly well received at Staples Centre or on social media before the 67th edition of the NBA’s annual showcase.

Fans throughout the crowd reacted with varying levels of enthusiasm throughout her 2 and a half minute version of the song. Although Fergie was on pitch, her tempo, musical accompaniment and sexy delivery were not exactly typical for a sporting event or a patriotic song.

It was terrible, to say the least. If you don’t believe me, check out some of the crowd’s reactions as she belted her heart out:

If you feel like cringing multiple times in 2 and a half minutes, give the full version a watch yourself:
